Kidneys play the most important role in keeping the body healthy, which works to purify the blood and remove toxins. But when kidney function begins to weaken, it becomes difficult for the body to filter certain nutrients, especially potassium. Increased level of potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia) can prove to be very dangerous for kidney patients, due to which there is a risk of uncontrolled heartbeat. Let us know about 5 types of foods which should be immediately removed from your diet in case of kidney disease. 1. High-potassium fruits like banana and avocado: Fruits are generally considered very good for health, but some fruits can act like poison for kidney patients. Bananas contain very high amounts of potassium. Apart from this, avocado, kiwi, orange and apricot are also great sources of potassium. If your kidneys are not functioning properly, avoid consuming these fruits. Instead of these, apple, papaya or guava can be consumed in limited quantities on the advice of the doctor. 2. Green leafy vegetables and spinach: Spinach, broccoli and other green leafy vegetables are rich in iron and vitamins, but potassium is also found in abundance in them. Even after cooking, the density of potassium remains in them. Kidney patients should completely avoid drinking raw salad or spinach soup. Before using vegetables, it is better to pass them through the ‘leaching’ process (cutting them and then boiling them in hot water and throwing them away), which reduces the potassium content to some extent. 3. Potatoes, sweet potatoes and the tubers growing underground, the most commonly used potato in the Indian kitchen and the sweet potato, which is eaten with relish in winters, are also a treasure trove of potassium. Along with this, this element is also found in abundance in tuberous vegetables like taro and jamikand. People suffering from chronic kidney problems (CKD) are strictly advised against consuming excessive amounts of potatoes or sweet potatoes as it can directly impair creatinine and potassium levels. 4. Tomato and its puree or sauce: Tomato, which enhances the taste of vegetables, can also be a cause of concern for kidney patients. One cup of tomato puree contains a lot of potassium. Consuming tomato ketchup, sauce and ready-to-eat curry or soup available in the market increases the pressure on the kidneys. According to diet experts, kidney patients should minimize or stop using tomato gravy in their vegetables. 5. Dry fruits, nuts and whole grains: As much as hard and dry fruits like almonds, cashews, walnuts, pistachios and raisins are good for health, they can be equally harmful for the kidneys. Nuts and seeds contain a lot of phosphorus along with potassium, which becomes impossible for weak kidneys to filter. Apart from this, brown rice and whole wheat (whole grains) have higher potassium levels than white rice, hence doctors advise kidney patients to limit the intake of refined grains.
