Story of Kuldhara village of Jaisalmer, the entire village has been deserted for 200 years because of the chief’s daughter – read the interesting story.
Rajasthan, where sand not only blows in the wind, but also keeps centuries-old secrets hidden within itself. Here every fort tells a story, while behind every mansion there is an incomplete story buried and amidst these stories, there exists a village in the desert of Jaisalmer, which has been deserted for the last 200 years. The name of that village is – Kuldhara and after hearing the stories of this village, everyone gets surprised whether this really happened. Because of one girl, the entire village became deserted and even today no one can stay at night in that village. One such story is of Kuldhara village of Rajasthan, so let’s take a look…
In this village of Jaisalmer, people from outside come to visit during the day and get a lot of photographs taken, look at the ruins and talk about the history… But as soon as the sun sets, the direction of the wind changes and a fear starts to arise due to the sounds of the wind, the silence of the broken houses here starts to unsettle and then begins the story of that village when the entire village had disappeared overnight.
When Kuldhara village was the pride of the desert!
When Kuldhara was not just a village but the pride of the desert. Kuldhara, which today appears to be in ruins, was once considered the most prosperous village of the princely state of Jaisalmer. Historians say that Paliwal Brahmins settled this village around the 13th century. These people were very intelligent, hardworking and expert in business and farming. In the desert where people yearned for a drop of water, the Paliwals made such a water conservation system that even the barren land started flourishing. He developed ‘Khadin technique’, through which farming was done by collecting rain water. Gradually, Kuldhara became so prosperous that 84 surrounding villages settled under its influence. This village was not only rich… but also very organized.
- Houses made of stones…
- Courtyard between every house…
- Special place for air to come out…
- Step well for water…
Everything looks as if it has been designed by a modern engineer. Even today, when people see the ruins of Kuldhara, they understand that the people living here were far ahead of their time. But often in history the greatest disaster occurs where there is the most prosperity. When Jaisalmer was ruled by fear rather than rule. In the beginning of the 19th century, the real influence on the Jaisalmer state was not the king but his Diwan Salim Singh. In local folklore, his name is taken as a ruler who was cruel, arrogant and merciless. It is said that he imposed heavy taxes on his subjects. People trembled at his name. But the real reason for the destruction of Kuldhara was not just tax… but a girl and that girl was the beautiful daughter of the head of that village.
When Salim Singh was fascinated by the chief’s daughter
It is said that the chief’s daughter was very beautiful and the news of her beauty gradually reached Jaisalmer court. When Salim Singh heard about her, he was adamant on getting that girl. He sent a message to the villagers. Get the girl married to me…otherwise the entire village will be ruined. This was not a relationship but it was an open threat of the power of power and Salim Singh had given three days’ time to the villagers.
After this, the villagers called a Panchayat on a stormy night and then a decision was taken in this Panchayat which changed the entire history. On one hand the strength of Salim Singh…on the other hand the respect of the village. Paliwal Brahmins knew that if they protested, a massacre could take place, but they also did not accept forcefully handing over their daughter. People from 84 villages also reached this Panchayat. Desert night… thousands of people… and worry on every face.
….and then a decision was taken in the Panchayat, after which the entire history there changed. Said in the Panchayat that ‘We will give up our land…but not our daughter and honour. After this, everyone left that village in the same condition in which they came there. No one thought of taking anything. No one even went inside the house again. Leaving everything behind, he left from there and while leaving he cursed that village that no one would be able to settle there and even today that village is cursed where does it go, no one can stay there at night.
Next day, when the king’s people reached the village in the morning, they saw that the entire village was deserted. No one had even a clue as to where the people of the village had suddenly gone. It seemed as if a gust of wind came and took the entire village with it.
- Broken doors…
- Empty courtyard…
- Extinguished stoves…
It seemed as if the entire village had suddenly disappeared into thin air.
Was Kuldhara really cursed?
According to folklore, the Paliwal Brahmins cursed Kuldhara while leaving the village. After today no one will be able to settle here. And this is the reason why Kuldhara remains deserted even after two hundred years. Local people say that many people tried to settle here… but no one could survive. Someone heard strange sounds… someone claimed to have seen shadows… and someone ran away in fear.
Gradually Kuldhara started being called a ‘ghost village’. A civilization is still alive in the ruins. Today Kuldhara is under the supervision of the Archaeological Department of India. Broken stone houses are still standing here. Stoves are visible in many houses. At some places, there is space for keeping pitchers. It seems as if the people living here have just left and gone somewhere and never came back. The temple built in the middle of the village still stands as a witness of time. When the desert wind passes through these ruins, the whole atmosphere becomes mysterious.
Are there really spirits in this village?
It is a very popular belief among the local people that Kuldhara is cursed even today. Many people claim that the sounds of footsteps are heard here at night. Some people feel as if someone is following them. In 2013, some paranormal experts also investigated here. Although no ghostly activity has been scientifically confirmed… but the fear of Kuldhara is still alive in the minds of people. For this reason, staying here at night for a long time was not allowed. Even today an incomplete question stands in the desert. Kuldhara is not just a village… but it is a question of history, the answer to which has not been clearly answered till date.
Did the villagers really curse and leave?
Did they run away in fear of Salim Singh?
Or did water shortage and taxes force them to do so?
Whatever may be the truth…
But one thing is clearly visible even today – the people of Kuldhara could leave their homes… but not their honor. And perhaps this is the reason why even today in the desert of Rajasthan, broken stones whisper like – ‘We were destroyed… but did not bow down…’
