Kusal Mendis will become the ODI and T20 captain of Sri Lanka national cricket team, a big turn in his career after the ban.
Tezzbuzz Desk- A major administrative and strategic change is being seen in the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team, where preparations for making Kusal Mendis the new captain of the ODI and T20 team are considered almost complete. According to media reports, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board may soon make its official announcement, after which the new leadership system will be implemented in the limited overs team.
According to reports, Kusal Mendis will be given the captaincy of the ODI and T20 team from the West Indies tour. After this change, Charith Asalanka’s captaincy will end in the ODI format, while Dasun Shanaka will also be removed from the leadership in the T20 format. In Test cricket, the captaincy will remain with Dhananjaya de Silva as before, due to which the model of different leadership will continue in all three formats.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board believes that there is a need for a stable and aggressive leadership in limited overs, and Kusal Mendis can prove to be the right choice for this role. Considering his recent performance, consistency and experience in batting, the selectors have taken this big decision.
It is noteworthy that Kusal Mendis’s career has been full of ups and downs. He was banned for one year for violating the Covid-19 protocol during the England tour in 2021. At that time, action was also taken against Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka along with him. This incident had a major impact on his international career and he had to stay out of the team for a long time.
But now after five years, Mendis has made a great comeback and has won the trust of the selectors again by performing better. Considering his maturity in batting and ability to play under pressure, he is being given the responsibility of leadership.
Cricket experts believe that this decision could be the beginning of a new era for Sri Lankan cricket, where the team will move forward with a balance of young and experienced players. Although the pressure of captaincy will be a big challenge for Mendis, but considering his experience, better performance is expected from him.
