Kylian Mbappe’s younger brother, Ethan Mbappe was shown a straight red card during Lille’s match against Real Betis in the Champions League on Tuesday.
The incident took place in the 55th minute after Real Betis had just scored to take a 3-2 lead, which ended up being the final score. Replays showed that the 19-year-old elbowed Betis centre-back Natan in the face after the former presumably triggered the latter with some words.
The referee, after reviewing the incident, decided it was a serious enough offence to warrant a red card and subsequently sent off Ethan.
It was a bittersweet end for Ethan in just his third UCL game after having assisted Lille’s first goal scored by Ayase Ueda.
At 19 years and 253 days, Ethan also became the youngest player to be sent off in the Champions League for a French club.
In contrast, his older brother Kylian scored a first-half goal to help Real Madrid defeat Inter Milan 2-1, making it a mixed day on the football field for the Mbappe family.
