The Land Rover Defender could become significantly more affordable in India, with locally assembled versions expected to start at around Rs 89 lakh, ex-showroom. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is reportedly preparing to introduce Completely Knocked Down (CKD) assembly for the popular luxury SUV, potentially bringing its entry-level price below the Rs 1 crore mark.
The current imported Defender range starts at approximately Rs 1.07 crore, ex-showroom. Local assembly could therefore make the rugged SUV more accessible to buyers looking for a premium off-roader.
Local Assembly Could Reduce Prices
The expected price reduction is linked to a shift towards local assembly rather than a direct benefit from trade agreements. Under the CKD process, vehicles are imported in components and assembled domestically, potentially reducing the customs duty burden compared with importing fully built vehicles.
JLR has previously introduced local assembly for models such as the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport in India. Those vehicles received substantial price reductions following localisation.
If a similar strategy is adopted for the Defender, the company could lower the starting price while strengthening its position in India’s luxury SUV market. However, the estimated Rs 89 lakh price has not yet been officially confirmed.
Four Engine Options Could Be Available
The locally assembled Defender range could offer multiple petrol and diesel powertrains, giving buyers a broader choice of performance and driving characteristics.
The entry-level version is expected to use a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing around 300 PS and 400 Nm of torque.
A 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine could also join the lineup. The international P400 version of this engine develops approximately 400 PS and 550 Nm, supported by 48V mild-hybrid technology.
The range could additionally include a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine producing up to 350 PS and 700 Nm in the D350 specification. A supercharged 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine sits at the higher-performance end of the existing lineup.
The final combination of engines available in India will depend on JLR’s launch plans.
Off-Road Capability Remains a Major Attraction
The Defender is known for combining rugged styling with serious off-road hardware. Depending on the variant, equipment includes a four-wheel-drive system, an eight-speed automatic transmission, a two-speed transfer case and Land Rover’s Terrain Response system.
Selected versions also offer electronic air suspension and an electronically controlled rear differential. The SUV’s maximum claimed water-wading depth reaches 900 mm, making it suitable for challenging terrain when driven within its operating limits.
The high-performance Defender Octa, powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 635 PS and 750 Nm, could also be considered for local assembly, although its inclusion remains uncertain.
What Buyers Should Expect
A locally assembled Defender starting below Rs 90 lakh could attract buyers who previously considered the SUV too expensive. However, prices will vary by body style, engine, equipment and variant.
JLR has yet to confirm the assembly timeline, final pricing and Indian-market specifications. Prospective buyers should therefore treat the reported Rs 89 lakh starting price as an estimate rather than an announced price.
Summary
The Land Rover Defender could receive a locally assembled version in India with an estimated starting price of Rs 89 lakh, compared with around Rs 1.07 crore for the current imported entry-level model. The lineup could include 2.0-litre petrol, 3.0-litre petrol and diesel engines, alongside higher-performance options. JLR has not yet confirmed final prices, launch timing or the complete variant lineup.
