On the occasion of national festival Gandhi Jayanti, on October 2, the country's major oil marketing companies (OMCs) have updated the new retail prices of petrol and diesel. Due to difference in freight charges and local VAT in the state, variation in fuel prices is being seen in different districts of Uttar Pradesh. According to the latest data, the most expensive fuel in Uttar Pradesh has been recorded in Terai and remote districts like Balrampur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sultanpur and Ballia. Diesel prices in Balrampur are at an all-time high of around ₹102.75 per litre, while in Lakhimpur and Sultanpur too, petrol and diesel prices are running well above the state average due to high transportation costs. On the other hand, due to proximity to oil depots and refineries, the cheapest fuel in the state is being sold in Mathura and Agra, where diesel is priced around ₹94.90 to ₹95.14 per litre. Latest prices of petrol and diesel in major cities of UP today. Oil prices remain stable in big metros of the state: Lucknow: Petrol ₹ 101.86 per liter. Often a question arises in the minds of consumers that when the state level VAT rate is the same in the entire Uttar Pradesh, then why is there a difference in the prices in Lucknow, Noida and Balrampur or Lakhimpur. The main reason behind this is transportation expenses i.e. 'Dealer Freight' (Freight Charges). Indian Oil has a large refinery in Mathura and major oil depots in Tundla, Mughalsarai and Kanpur. The greater the distance from these main pipelines and depots to the districts, the more the transportation cost of delivering oil increases. This is the reason why consumers in the Terai areas bordering Nepal and some interior districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh have to pay more per liter.
