Controversy over Zee5’s documentary series

Zee5 platform had decided to make a documentary series on Lawrence Bishnoi, which was named – ‘Lawrence of Punjab’. This series was to be released on 27 April 2026. But now there is a big hurdle in releasing this show. On Friday, Zee5 told the Delhi High Court that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Central Government has given them clear instructions not to release this documentary. The ministry issued an official advisory at around 12 noon and asked Zee5 not to stream the show. Zee5’s lawyer said in the court, ‘MIB has issued an advisory at 12 noon asking us not to release it.’ Now the next hearing of this case will be on Monday, 27 April 2026.

About ‘Lawrence of Punjab’ series

This documentary series is directed by Raghav Dar. The show shows the complete story of the life of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, how an ordinary college student became a big gangster in Punjab. The makers say that the show is as strong and interesting as documentaries based on true events like ‘Scam 1992’ and ‘Delhi Crime’, but its entire focus is on the underworld. The show includes original interviews, old footage and recreated scenes of events.

Why is there controversy?

Punjab Police had written a letter to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and appealed not to release the show. Police say that in this documentary, the life and crimes of Lawrence Bishnoi have been shown in such detail that there is a danger of glorifying organized crime. The police specifically raised these objections:

The show mentions real crimes like the murder of Sidhu Moosewala

Scenes have been created in a dramatic manner, which can make the crime appear attractive and normal.

Young audiences may be influenced by this and attracted towards crime

This may affect law and order in Punjab and may disturb peace.

Punjab Congress President and MP Amarinder Singh Raja Waring had also written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a complete ban on this show.

What is the situation now?

Zee5 is no longer releasing the show following the ministry’s instructions. The matter is in Delhi High Court and the final decision will be clear only after the hearing on Monday. This entire controversy highlights how sensitive content based on criminals’ lives can be, especially when the person is still actively in the news and has multiple cases pending against him.
