‘Lawrence of Punjab’ Docuseries Sparks Outrage As Lawrence Bishnoi’s Cousin Accuses Makers Of Distorted Narrative: ‘With Whose Permission…’

Punjab Police Seek Ban Over Concerns of Crime Glorification

Lawrence Bishnoi’s cousin Ramesh Bishnoi has strongly opposed the upcoming docuseries “Lawrence of Punjab”demanding an immediate ban on its release. Speaking to ANI, he criticised the makers for proceeding without family or official approval.

“Punjab is the land of Gurus. With whose permission has the director created this series? No permission from family or government. What does he aim to prove through it? The cases are still under trial in court. We object to the series, and it should be banned,” said Ramesh Bishnoi.

His remarks come amid growing controversy surrounding the OTT project, which is scheduled to release on April 27 on ZEE5.

Police Raise Legal Concerns and Issue Blocking Request to MIB

Earlier, the Punjab Police formally requested the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) to block public access to the docuseries “Lawrence of Punjab”. The communication was issued by Special Director General of Police (Cyber Crime) V. Neeraja, highlighting serious concerns over its content.

According to the police, the series portrays the life and alleged criminal activities of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, including dramatized references to high-profile incidents such as the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala. Authorities fear the narrative may “glorify and simplify organised crime,” potentially influencing young viewers and normalising criminal behaviour.

The request was made under Section 69A(1) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, along with the IT (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking for Access of Information by Public) Rules, 2009. The police have also urged authorities to direct ZEE5 to halt streaming and remove the trailer globally.

Officials further noted that digital content has a wider and faster reach due to its audio-visual format, increasing its impact on impressionable audiences and potentially affecting public order.

Meanwhile, the makers of the series stated that “Lawrence of Punjab traces the journey of a criminal identity through the lens of culture, systems, and visibility. From student politics and music to ideology and media amplification, the series pieces together how aspiration, power, and perception intersect to shape a new-age digital syndicate. With Lawrence Bishnoi as a key case study within this ecosystem, the narrative expands beyond the individual to examine the larger cultural and social context, focusing on consequences.”
