In fact, during the CJP protest in Delhi on Saturday, the police had detained many protesters. These included some lawyers associated with the Supreme Court and other courts of Delhi. After this action, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) had appealed to CJI Surya Kant for immediate intervention.

According to the SCAORA Chairman, the CJI spoke to the concerned authorities and steps were taken for the release of the lawyers. After this the police started releasing the lawyers.

The Supreme Court Bar Association passed a resolution in this case and expressed concern over reports of alleged excessive use of force and detention against the protesting senior and young lawyers, especially women lawyers. The association had requested the CJI to talk to the concerned authorities to ensure the condition and safety of the detained lawyers, provide them legal aid and immediately release those whose detention has no valid basis.

This development has come to light at a time when a demonstration was organized in Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. After the police action and detention of the lawyers, the case has attracted attention at the legal and administrative level.
