US States Sue Trump Tariffs: President Donald Trump’s new tariff decisions have sparked a major diplomatic and legal crisis in the United States. On Monday, 25 US states united and filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration.
These states directly allege that the administration is attempting to reimpose import taxes through the backdoor, which were struck down by the country’s Supreme Court in February this year as unconstitutional.
What is the entire controversy?
The entire dispute revolves around the use of the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Trump invoked this old law to impose heavy taxes on imports from almost every country, which he described as a “national emergency.”
However, the Supreme Court clarified in its decision that such tariffs are not permitted under the IEEPA. Following this court defeat, the Trump administration was forced to refund the taxes to the importers. Now, the administration has reimposed tariffs using Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
Which countries will be affected?
Under the new policy, the Trump administration has imposed permanent tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on goods from 59 countries and the European Union. Significantly, these countries account for approximately 99 percent of total imports into the United States.
The Trump administration argues that this move is intended to punish countries that import goods made with forced labor. Donald Trump believes that higher tariffs will reduce foreign dependence and boost the American manufacturing sector.
What is the opposition from the states?
New York Attorney General Letitia James has called this decision illegal. They argue that after losing in the Supreme Court, the administration is now recklessly imposing tax burdens on families and local businesses. States claim that these new tariffs are merely a pretext to compensate for previously repealed taxes.

White House spokesman Kush Desai justified the government’s action. He stated that Section 301 is a powerful legal tool used to eliminate unfair trade policies that harm the interests of American workers.
