Liver Day 2026: Take timely measures, avoid Liver Cancer, expert advice

The most important organ in the body is the liver. Liver performs more than 50 functions such as blood purification, bile production, metabolism and elimination of toxins from the body. But often due to changes in lifestyle, liver health deteriorates. Instead of excreting the toxins accumulated in the liver, they remain in the body. As a result of which the health deteriorates. Liver cancer is one of the few cancers that is not only preventable, but can be highly effective if taken at the right time. However, the problem is not lack of solutions but lack of awareness and timely action.(Photo courtesy – istock)

Major risk factors for liver cancer are chronic hepatitis B and C infection, excessive alcohol consumption, and metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes, which cause fatty liver problems. A large number of liver cancer cases in India are still due to undiagnosed or untreated viral hepatitis, says Dr Says Chetan Kalal, Hepatologist and Liver Transplant Physician, Saifee Hospital.

Prevention begins with vaccination against hepatitis B. The vaccine is safe, readily available and greatly reduces lifetime risk. Also, regular screening is especially important in high-risk individuals—such as those with preexisting liver disease, a family history, or metabolic syndrome. Early detection of liver damage can lead to treatment before cancer develops.

Lifestyle also plays a very important role. Limiting alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding high sugar and ultra-processed foods can reduce the risk of fatty liver, which is now a leading cause of liver cancer globally.

Progression of liver diseases is often silent, a neglected reality. Many patients do not experience any symptoms until the late stages, so regular health check-ups are essential.

The message is clear: liver cancer is often the result of preventable causes. This risk is largely preventable through vaccination, timely screening and appropriate lifestyle changes.
