The Lok Sabha on Monday passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, replacing the recent ordinance that increased the sanctioned strength of the apex court from 34 to 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India.
The bill was cleared without debate, as opposition members continued raising slogans over the NEET paper leak and alleged irregularities in Ram temple donations. A statutory resolution moved by opposition members denouncing the ordinance was rejected by a voice vote.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal made brief introductory remarks before the chair urged members to speak on the resolution. With sloganeering persisting, the bill was put to vote and passed.
This marks the second time in recent weeks that a bill has been cleared without discussion, following the passage of the births and deaths registration amendment last week. After the Supreme Court judges bill was passed, the House was adjourned for the day.
