Even in the era of digital banking and UPI, check book today is one of the most important banking documents for financial transactions, bulk payments and official security. But if your checkbook or the signed or blank checks in it are lost or stolen, it can become the biggest threat to your bank account. Fraudsters can withdraw lakhs of rupees from your account within minutes through signature forgery, check alteration or check cloning. In such a situation, instead of panicking, it is very essential to take some necessary legal and banking steps immediately so that your hard-earned money remains completely safe.
1. Apply 'Stop Payment' immediately through netbanking or mobile app.
The first and quickest step you should take as soon as you discover that your check book is missing is to immediately stop payment on all those check numbers. For this there is absolutely no need to wait to go to the bank branch:
-
Mobile Banking/NetBanking Login: Go to the official app of your bank (like SBI YONO, HDFC MobileBanking, ICICI iMobile etc.).
-
Go to Service Request: Select 'Check Services' or 'Service Request' option.
-
Select Stop Check option: Click on 'Stop Check Payment'.
-
Enter range of check numbers: If the entire check book is lost, enter the entire range from the first check number to the last check number (Cheque Series) and 'Confirm'. By doing this, all those checks will be immediately blocked in the system and no one will be able to encash them.
2. Inform the bank's toll-free customer care and home branch
If you do not have access to internet banking, immediately call your bank's 24×7 official customer care number.
-
After getting your identity verified by the Customer Care Executive, submit a verbal request for imposing 'Stop Payment' on your entire check book or related check leaves.
-
Immediately thereafter send a formal email or submit a written application to the manager of your home branch. In this letter clearly write the account number, series of check numbers and time of loss. Keep the receipt copy of this letter from the branch safe with you.
3. File a missing report with the police (NCR/FIR)
Filing a police report is the most important step in securing legal protection in case of lost checkbook.
-
You can file a 'Lost Item Report' (Non-Cognizable Report – NCR) online from home by visiting the police portal of your state.
-
If the check book is stolen or already had your signature on it, go to the nearest police station and lodge a formal complaint.
-
Importance: In future, if a fraudster deposits that check in the bank and gets it bounced and sends a false legal notice of 'check bounce' (Section 138 – Negotiable Instruments Act) against you, then this police complaint will become the strongest legal shield for you in the court.
4. Activate Positive Pay System (PPS) immediately
The 'Positive Pay System' implemented by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the most effective weapon to prevent major check frauds.
-
Under this rule, to clear a check worth ₹ 50,000 or more than ₹ 5,00,000, the account holder has to inform the bank in advance about the check number, date of issue, name of the beneficiary (payee) and the exact amount through the app or SMS.
-
Even if a fraudster presents the amount on your check to the bank, the check will be immediately rejected due to mismatch with the positive pay details entered in the bank's system.
5. Keep a close eye on bank statements and apply for a new check book
-
After the checkbook is lost, keep a constant eye on your bank account transactions (Mini Statement / SMS Alerts) for the next few weeks.
-
If any suspicious transaction is seen from the account, then without any delay lodge a complaint of 'Unauthorized Transaction' with the bank.
-
After getting the old checks completely blocked, you can submit a request to your bank to issue a new check book.
