New Delhi: India had another stellar day at the Commonwealth Games, with athletes making their mark in various disciplines, from wrestling to athletics. Lovepreet Singh won a silver medal in the men’s 110kg+ weightlifting event, while Seema Kaliraman brought pride to the nation by winning a bronze medal in the women’s discus throw. Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, along with Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh, entered the javelin final, while Tejaswin Shankar remains firmly in contention for a medal in the men’s decathlon.
Great performance from Lovepreet
Lovepreet Singh produced a career-best performance, setting a new Commonwealth Games record with a snatch of 176 kg and finishing with a total lift of 388 kg (176 + 212). However, the gold medal went to David Andrew Littie of New Zealand, who lifted a total of 389 kg. The Punjab weightlifter had a 10 kg lead after the snatch and appeared headed for victory, but Littie made a strong comeback in the clean and jerk, lifting a Games record 223 kg. To maintain the top spot, Lovepreet had to lift 217 kg, a feat he tried his best to achieve, but his attempt was unsuccessful.

Weightlifting team completes impressive run in Glasgow
In the women’s +86 kg category, 18-year-old Martina Devi also put up a thrilling fight. Despite failing in her first two snatch attempts, she refused to give up and managed to lift 105 kg in her final attempt to stay in the competition. Despite lifting a total of 245 kg (105 + 140), she failed in her clean and jerk attempts of 144 and 146 kg, missing out on fourth place on countback.
India won a total of 8 medals
Lovepreet’s silver medal is a step up from her bronze medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. With this, India’s weightlifting contingent finished its campaign in Glasgow with a total of eight medals: one gold, six silver, and one bronze. Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal, India’s only silver medal, while Rishikant Singh and Raja Muthupandi impressed with silver medals. Gyaneshwari Yadav and Bindyarani Devi also delivered strong performances, living up to expectations. The performances of Valluri Ajaya Babu and Harjinder Kaur also gave the team new hope for the future.
