Modi government is going to make an important amendment in the rules of LPG cylinder booking from October 1, 2026, under which biometric Aadhaar authentication has now been made completely mandatory for customers. Domestic LPG booking rules will change from October 1
The government has clarified the main reason behind this tough decision so that the real and true benefit of gas subsidy available at regulated retail selling price can be extended only to the eligible families. After the new rules come into effect, no customer will be able to book subsidized LPG refill without biometric authentication. Will gas supply stop if biometrics are not done?
The biggest relief is that those customers who do not want to do biometric authentication for some reason or are unable to complete it, they will not be stopped from getting LPG cylinders. However, the difference will be that they will not get the benefit of subsidy and they will be forced to buy the cylinder at the market price i.e. full rate. According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, this step has been taken to make the system related to LPG in the country transparent.
Biometric authentication of 89.9% consumers of the country completed
According to government data, as of September 19, most of the total 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers in the country had completed their biometric Aadhaar authentication. This figure is approximately 89.9 percent of total LPG users. The government has also clarified that consumers whose biometric authentication has already been completed, there is no need to undergo the process again.
Strict steps taken to stop fraud
Currently, the indirect subsidy on 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder is around Rs 210 during September 2026. LPG consumers who have not yet completed their authentication will once again be able to book cylinders at subsidized rates after completing it. The biggest benefit of this step of the government will be that misuse of domestic subsidized cylinders in commercial and industrial places will be stopped and it will also help a lot in identifying duplicate and ineligible connections.
Government's special appeal to consumers and deadline
The rule of biometric authentication is not new for domestic LPG customers across the country. This awareness campaign is being run continuously by the government since October 2023. However, many customers were not able to complete it on time, in view of which the government gave relief and extended its deadline several times. Recently, the last date for completing this important work was kept as 30th June, which was later extended to 14th September 2026. Now after this extended period, the government has made it clear that the new rules will be implemented with full strictness from October 1, 2026.
Now getting biometric authentication done has become very easy
If you have not completed your LPG biometric Aadhaar authentication yet, there is no need to panic or stand in long queues. Keeping in mind the convenience of the consumers, the government and oil companies have made this process very simple. If consumers wish, they can easily get it done through online mode sitting at their home, through LPG delivery man at the time of cylinder delivery or by directly visiting their gas agency.
