The left-handed batter played a reckless shot early on and paid the price as the Super Giants crashed to 10/2 only in the second over of the innings as focus is massively on Sanjiv Goenka whether he will wield the axe on Pant ahead of IPL 2027.

During the IPL 2025 auction, the 28-year-old became the most expensive buy in IPL auction history, fetching a jaw-dropping amount of ₹27 crore. However, the keeper-batter has hardly lived up to the billing. The previous edition saw him muster only 269 runs in 14 matches, averaging 24.45 with 118 of them coming against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Pant’s only innings of note in IPL 2026 has been of 68 not out against the SunRisers Hyderabad to help the Super Giants get over the line in a nervy run-chase of 157. But the keeper-batter’s scores outside of that have been 7, 10, 18, 1 and 43. Wednesday’s game against the Royals saw him go for a blind slog against Nandre Burger and the edge carried to Dhruv Jurel behind the stumps. Fans have also blamed him for playing a reckless shot when Pant needed to show some semblance of control before going for the big shots in pursuit of 160.

LSG vs RR, IPL 2026: Will Sanjiv Goenka release Rishabh Pant ahead of the next season?
With Pant’s dwindling performances, it remains to be seen whether franchise owner Sanjiv Goenka will wield the axe on the keeper-batter. Should the Super Giants fail to reach the playoffs this time, it will be the third consecutive occasion that they have failed to do it.
At the time of writing this, the Super Giants had succumbed to 105/6. As for the Royals, Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 43 was integral in giving them a competitive total.
