Mae Whitman returns to TV with comedy ‘Whisper Sisters’

Whisper Sisters has found its leading stars, with Mae Whitman and Emily Meade are set to headline Corey Roederer’s single-camera comedy pilot centered on Kentucky’s male-dominated bourbon and moonshine industry.

Filming for the comedy’s pilot will kick off in Louisville, Kentucky, this summer.

The pilot honors the overlooked women who played a crucial role in Kentucky’s Prohibition-era bootlegging industry but were ultimately written out of history despite their vital role, known collectively as the “Whisper Sisters.”

Taking place in and around Kentucky’s bourbon country, the upcoming comedy draws its humor from ideological conflicts and the messy dynamics of a deeply dysfunctional family.

In the series the Parenthood star Mae, 38, is expected to play Alexis Whisper, Brooklyn-based coastal elite who left Kentucky behind in hopes of a new life.

Emily Meade will take on the role of Alexis’ estranged sister Erin Whisper, a fiercely independent single mother who chose to stay in Kentucky.

Their father’s funeral brings the estranged sisters back together, forcing the polar opposites to work side by side to save the family’s underground moonshine empire and protect the loved ones who have no idea it exists.
