Just a few days after updating its popular SUV, the Scorpio-N, Mahindra Automotive is gearing up for the launch of the updated iteration of its Thar three-door SUV. Yes, after giving the Thar a small update a little while ago, it is now expected to give the Thar three-door a major update. Its unveiling will take place next week at the company’s annual Freedom Drive event ahead of Independence Day. The popular lifestyle SUV will be getting a number of updates, which it will be borrowing from its elder sibling, the Thar Roxx, including ADAS, Harman Kardon music system, and others.
Now, although the current Thar is one of the most capable lifestyle SUVs in the country, it gets criticised for missing out on a number of comfort and safety features. Mahindra, however, is now ready to offer them in this SUV to make it even more popular.
The first and the most major update of the new Thar three-door will be the addition of an Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite. Recent spy shots have revealed what appears to be a front-mounted camera behind the windshield. This indicates that the facelifted Thar could finally get the same ADAS technology as the Thar Roxx and the Scorpio-N.
Now, although Mahindra has not confirmed the exact functions, this system could include features such as Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, and Adaptive Cruise Control. Mostly the same as what is available on the Thar Roxx.
The facelifted Thar is also expected to replace the existing manual air-conditioning controls with automatic climate control. This has been one of the most requested features by buyers. And it will make the SUV more comfortable for daily commuting, especially during India’s hot summers.
Another notable upgrade, which could be offered in the Thar three-door, will be a 10.25-inch fully digital TFT instrument cluster. This will replace the current analogue setup. And the new display is expected to offer a more premium look. It will also provide additional vehicle information and customisable layouts.
Mahindra is also expected to introduce ventilated front seats on the three-door Thar. This feature has become increasingly popular in the Indian market. The reason is that it becomes very useful during the summer months, as it helps in keeping occupants cool and comfortable.
Last but not least, another major addition is expected to be the premium Harman Kardon audio system from the Thar Roxx. This high-end music system will significantly improve the in-cabin entertainment experience over the current setup.
Apart from the new features, Mahindra will also be refreshing the Thar’s exterior styling with a bunch of updates. And, like the interior, these too have been inspired by the Thar Roxx. At the front, the SUV will get a redesigned grille along with new circular LED projector headlamps. These lights will also feature distinctive C-shaped LED daytime running lights. The front bumper will also be revised. Meanwhile, the fog lamps could switch to LED units with a cornering function.
Moving to the side, the facelifted Thar has already been spotted testing with a new set of dual-tone alloy wheels. The wheels will retain the familiar five-spoke design. However, they will be more muscular and bold. They are expected to measure 18 inches.
However, some reports have suggested that Mahindra could even offer 19-inch alloy wheels on select variants. At the rear, the SUV is expected to receive redesigned LED tail lamps with a new lighting signature along with a slightly revised rear bumper.
Now, although the exterior and interior are expected to get major updates, Mahindra will not be making any changes under the bonnet. The facelifted Thar is expected to continue with the existing engine lineup. These consist of a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, a 1.5-litre diesel engine, and a 2.2-litre diesel engine.
Transmission choices are also expected to remain unchanged, with both a six-speed manual and a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Rear-wheel-drive variants are also expected to continue. Meanwhile, the 4×4 drivetrain will remain available on a few variants equipped with the larger petrol and diesel engines.
