Major accident in Kolkata: Three-storey warehouse under construction collapsed, many workers buried under the debris; Fear of many deaths, rescue work continues
Kolkata. A tragic accident took place in Taratala area of West Kolkata on Wednesday afternoon, when a three-storey warehouse under construction suddenly collapsed. Many workers were buried under the debris in the accident. According to preliminary information, at least five people are feared dead, while many others are likely to be trapped. Relief and rescue operations are continuing on a war footing.
This accident happened at around 12 noon near Brace Bridge on Transport Depot Road. According to eyewitnesses, after the building collapsed, screams of people buried under the debris were heard, after which there was chaos in the area. As soon as the information was received, police, fire department and disaster management teams reached the spot.
Kolkata Police officials said that so far 10 people have been safely pulled out of the debris. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals, where they are undergoing treatment. Due to the fear that many people are still trapped under the debris, the rescue operation is continuing.
According to the information, the molding work of the roof of the warehouse was going on at the time of the accident. The structure of the first and second floors was ready, while construction work was ongoing on the ground floor. Meanwhile, suddenly the entire building collapsed and heavy iron beams and concrete debris fell on the workers.
Teams of Kolkata Police, Disaster Management Group (DMG), Civil Defense Department, fire brigade personnel and army officers are involved in the rescue operation. Gas cutters, vertical drilling machines, cranes and other heavy machines are being used to reach the people buried under the debris.
After the accident, questions have also started being raised on the quality of construction work. A fire department official alleged that substandard material was being used in the construction of the godown. At the same time, local people have also cited the alleged illegal construction work going on in the area for a long time as a major reason for the accident.
Seeing the seriousness of the incident, the Urban Development Minister, senior Municipal Corporation officials and other public representatives reached the spot. Officials say that at present the priority is to safely rescue the people trapped under the debris. The causes of the accident and any negligence or irregularity in construction will be investigated later.
