Big update of EPFO! Now you can separate Member ID from UAN, know the complete process

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has issued a circular on April 13, 2026. Under this circular, the facility to differentiate erroneously generated Member IDs (MIDs) from the Universal Account Number (UAN) of a member has been extended. This facility will be available even if the employer has deposited contributions in such accounts without the knowledge of the member.

Earlier this facility was limited only to those cases in which there was no contribution or very little contribution. But, now in this updated process, those wrong MIDs in which employer’s contribution has been deposited have also been included. Members can directly initiate the process of separation of MIDs through EPFO Member Portal. This request is first sent to the concerned employer, who can accept or reject it. If contributions have been credited **up to twice**, the employer may approve separation of MIDs at his own discretion. If the employer rejects the request, or does not take any action within two weeks, or if the contributions are deposited between 3 and 6 times, the request is automatically forwarded to the Regional Office. There the Dealing Hand (Compliance), Section Supervisor, and finally RPFC (Compliance) check it. These officers approve or reject the request by recording the reasons.

**Online Process (Step-by-Step):**
1. Login to EPFO Unified Member Portal using UAN, password and CAPTCHA. After this complete the verification with OTP.
2. Go to **View > Service History**.
3. View the connected service information and identify the incorrect MID.
4. Click on **De-link** button given in the Action column.
5. Provide reasons, provide necessary consents, and complete verification via OTP linked to Aadhaar.

This system checks to prevent some ineligible cases. Such cases include MIDs whose claims have been settled or are pending, for which transfer requests have been made, or where large contributions have accumulated. In some cases, the ability to isolate MIDs may be limited for very old records. Only those MIDs that were truly added in error should be separated. EPFO will issue further guidelines regarding transfer of balance in segregated accounts to Suspense Receipt Fund (SRF).

This improvement, made in the interest of members, simplifies the process of correcting mistakes and helps maintain an accurate service history. Members should use this facility responsibly and regularly check their service history on the Portal. For official details, check EPFO website or latest circular.
