The scariest tower in the world! Know why people tremble after coming here
Located on a hilltop in the Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex near Gampola, Sri Lanka (about 3,567 feet / 1,087 meters above sea level), the Ambuluwawa Tower has gained worldwide fame as one of the scariest climbs for tourists. This 48-metre (157-ft) high white spiral structure offers spectacular 360-degree views, but is infamous for its heart-pounding climb.
What makes this climb so scary?
– Shrinking Spiral Stairs: Stairs are quite wide at the bottom, but get much narrower and steeper as you go up. In the upper reaches, two people can barely pass each other.
– Low or minimal handrails: Many tourists report that handrails are waist-high or lower, giving climbers a feeling of exposure and the fear of falling into a deep gorge.
– Wind pressure: Strong gusts of wind at high levels add to the instability and fear.
– Psychological pressure: Retreating becomes as difficult as moving forward, especially amid crowding. The tower has approximately 170–200+ external spiral stairs (not 300–400, as is sometimes claimed).
The combination of altitude, narrow paths, low obstacles and wind makes it a true test of courage, especially for those who have acrophobia (fear of heights). The elderly and small children are strongly advised to avoid climbing to the top.
### History and Significance
Former Prime Minister D.M. Built in 2006 as part of a government initiative led by Jayaratne, the tower is much more than just a viewing point. It is part of a multi-religious complex that symbolizes harmony, with sections dedicated to Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. The surrounding Biodiversity Park protects rare local plants on an ancient ‘inselberg’ (hill mound) formation.
Although the view from the peak is breath-taking, there are safety concerns due to its design. The tower has gone viral on social media as a “fear challenge,” attracting thrill-seekers from all over the world. Visitors should climb with caution, wear appropriate footwear, and avoid during rain or high winds.
