On the other hand, the rebel group has been given the name Democratic Trinamool Congress and the 'envelope' symbol.
Decision of the Commission before the by-elections
Two factions within the Trinamool Congress claimed the party's name and traditional symbol. After the dispute reached the Election Commission, the Commission examined the documents and claims of both sides. After that, through an interim order, it was clarified that no group can use the original All India Trinamool Congress name or the Ghasfool symbol.

This decision will have a direct impact on the upcoming West Bengal by-elections. Both groups will have to contest the election with a new identity in view of the by-elections to be held on October 6 along with Nandigram and Reginagar.
Arup Roy's group also got a new name and logo
For by-elections Election Commissiongave both groups the opportunity to choose a separate name and free logo. Accordingly, Mamata Banerjee's group has been given the name 'Mamata All India Trinamool Congress' and the symbol of a footballer. Arup Roy's group has been given the name and envelope symbol of 'Democratic Trinamool Congress'.
Remembering Shiv Sena split
The Election Commission's decision is reminiscent of the controversy over the party name and election symbol after the Shiv Sena split in Maharashtra. However, it cannot be directly said that the legal and constitutional situation of both the cases is the same. In the case of the Trinamool Congress, the current decision is interim in nature and the final dispute over the identity and symbol of the original party is still in a separate process.
In West Bengal, both groups will now enter the field with a new name and symbol. Therefore, instead of the traditional Trinamool name-symbol, new identities will be seen on ballot papers and EVMs.
