Mamta’s fort collapsed in Bengal, Stalin’s card wiped out in Tamil Nadu; What is the way forward for the opposition?

Mamata Banerjee And MK Stalin Loses: The results of the assembly elections held in four states and one union territory of the country are almost out. Bharatiya Janata Party has got a huge majority in Assam and Bengal. At the same time, Tamilaga Vetre Kazhagam (TVK) led by film actor Vijay has emerged as the largest party in Tamil Nadu. Congress has returned to Kerala after two decades, while in Puducherry the BJP alliance has succeeded in forming the government by winning 18 seats.

Of all these election states, West Bengal is very important for the Bharatiya Janata Party. For BJP, which has been searching for political ground in Bengal for a long time, this result is no less than finding a well in a desert. The 15-year tenure of TMC, which came into Bengal politics by ending the dominance of the Left, is ending today with the election defeat.

Third consecutive victory in Assam

With a bumper victory in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was successful in forming the government in the state for the third consecutive time. Here Bharatiya Janata Party was successful in winning 82 seats. Whereas Congress could win only 19 assembly seats. The exit poll data released by different agencies also predicted a bumper victory for BJP.

TVK tsunami in Tamil Nadu

The results of Tamil Nadu Assembly elections surprised everyone. Where film star Thalapathy Vijay’s TVK has emerged as the largest party by winning 107 seats. With victory on 60 seats, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) came second, while All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) became the third party by winning 47 seats. It is noteworthy that Stalin’s DMK was in power in Tamil Nadu for the last decade. The emergence of TVK as the largest party will end the traditional rivalry between the two main Dravidian parties, DMK and AIADMK.

Despite the previous controversy related to the stampede during a rally in September 2025, Vijay’s party has performed brilliantly in its very first election. This result has established him as a new force in the politics of the state. It is possible that he may join the ranks of those earlier actor-politicians who had successfully made their place in governance by joining politics.

Congress returns to Kerala after 10 years

In the results of Kerala Assembly elections, Congress led UDF performed better and managed to touch the majority tally. Here UDFI has got a total of 99 seats, in which Congress has won 63 assembly seats. With this victory, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will be removed from power in Kerala.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sunny Joseph termed these results as a clear sign of change in favor of the UDF and expressed confidence that the alliance will cross the 100-seat mark in the 140-member assembly. The result will give the Congress party a state government in the south, where its presence has declined in recent elections.

In November 2025, the Janata Dal (United)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won a landslide victory in Bihar and Nitish Kumar once again became the Chief Minister. However, Nitish Kumar resigned from the post in April 2026, reducing the number of prominent anti-BJP chief ministers.
