Mamata Banerjee’s legal battle over Bhawanipur defeat begins, reaches High Court; Subhendu Adhikari’s victory challenged

Kolkata. Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee has challenged the election results of Bhawanipur assembly seat in the Calcutta High Court. While filing a petition against his election defeat, he has demanded to preserve the documents and electronic records related to the election.

After Mamata Banerjee’s petition, now the election result of Bhawanipur seat has once again come at the center of legal dispute. BJP leader Subhendu Adhikari had defeated him on this seat by a margin of 15,105 votes.

Unexpected defeat on Bhawanipur seat-
Bhawanipur assembly seat has been considered a strong political stronghold of Mamata Banerjee for a long time. In such a situation, the defeat here created a stir in the politics of West Bengal.

After the election results, Mamata Banerjee has adopted the legal route instead of accepting defeat. In the petition filed in the High Court, he has demanded to preserve the records related to the election process.

Demand to keep EVMs and election documents safe-
Mamata Banerjee has urged the court to keep all election records, voting documents and electronic equipment including EVMs related to Bhawanipur assembly constituency safe.

It is feared in the petition that to prevent the possibility of any tampering or damage to these records, it is necessary to seal them immediately.

After Nandigram, Mamta and Shubhendu face to face again-
This is not the first case of election legal battle between Mamata Banerjee and Subhendu Adhikari. Mamata Banerjee had also challenged her defeat to Subhendu Adhikari on Nandigram seat in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections in the Calcutta High Court.

At that time, Mamata Banerjee had demanded a recount, alleging irregularities in the counting of votes. That case is still pending in the court.

Now, after the filing of a new election petition regarding Bhawanipur seat, two separate election disputes between Mamata Banerjee and Shubhendu Adhikari have reached the court.
