Manipur: Mob vandalizes Assam Rifles camp, torches several vehicles

Senapati Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) deployed to handle the situation

Senapati/Imphal. Hours after security forces conducted a search operation in an area in Manipur’s Senapati district, a mob pelted stones, vandalized an Assam Rifles camp and set ablaze three vehicles of security personnel. Officials gave this information on Wednesday. Officials said the violence took place at the paramilitary force camp located at the district headquarters at 9.30 am on Tuesday when a mob attacked the barrack.

Defense Public Relations Officer (PRO) said in a statement that Assam Rifles had launched patrolling and search operation in the area after receiving credible intelligence about the presence of armed cadres in Makuilongdi area, about two kilometers west of the designated camp of ‘National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak Muivah’ (NSCN-IM) in Oklong.

“Intelligence reports and social media posts revealed that armed cadres were roaming outside the designated camps; They were carrying weapons and wearing uniforms, which was a clear violation of the ceasefire norms.

He also said that these violations had been formally reported to the Ceasefire Monitoring Group (CFMG). He said that during the operation, Assam Rifles troops moved towards Makuilongdi and Oklong villages but were stopped by the residents there. Women were also included among these residents.

The officer said that amid increasing tension, news was received at around 9 pm that a huge crowd of people had gathered in Senapati city and they were preparing to march towards the Assam Rifles camp.

The statement said that despite the withdrawal of the troops, a large crowd reached the camp at around 9.30 pm and pelted stones, causing damage to property and also attempted arson.

This camp is located in Naga Tapahau of the district. Another officer said the mob vandalized and damaged Assam Rifles vehicles. “A light vehicle was set on fire, while two trucks were overturned and damaged and a civilian’s car was also burnt during the violence,” he said.

The statement said mild force was used in coordination with Manipur Police to disperse the violent mob and prevent the situation from worsening. The statement said that Senapati Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were immediately deployed to assist the security personnel in controlling the situation.
