Married judge had sex with ‘prominent’ cop for two years; gets away with slap on wrist- The Week

A married judge in the US had frequent intercourse with a “prominent” law enforcement officer inside the courthouse, but managed to get away with private reprimand, taking into consideration the judge’s “otherwise exemplary service to the court.”

The affair between the judge and the cop, who were not identified by name or gender, was brought to the notice of authorities by clerks in the 11th Circuit court, which encompasses federal courts in Florida, Georgia and Alabama, who had heard “kissing sounds and other noises” from the courthouse.

According to media reports, the two had sex during office hours in the private chambers for two years.

Some of the staff members, according to the New York Post, claimed that they were distracted and were made uncomfortable due to the sounds of intimacy made by the judge and the cop.

The judicial complaint, stated: ” the chief judge of the Subject Judge’s court received information indicating that the Subject Judge had engaged in judicial misconduct by, among other things, engaging in an extramarital affair with a law enforcement officer and, in the course of the affair, having sexual intercourse in the Subject Judge’s office during work hours and within hearing distance of the judge’s clerks.”

It said a clerk who sat at a desk located immediately outside of the judge’s private office reportedly either saw the officer in chambers or heard sounds consistent with sexual activity.

The complaint alleged: “Multiple clerks stated that, given their inexperience, they were uncomfortable with the level of discretion they appeared to exercise in handling civil cases.”

The judge will receive a private warning/reprimand for the actions. The judge will also have to write letters of apology to six former law clerks, give up the chance to serve as chief judge in the future if eligible, and indefinitely refrain from service on any judicial conference committee.
