Maruti Baleno Becomes No.1 Selling Car In September: Top 10 Selling Cars Ranked

The Maruti Baleno was the country’s most-dispatched passenger vehicle in September 2026, with 25,392 units sent from the factory to dealers, according to sales data from AutoPunditz. That put it comfortably ahead of the Tata Nexon at 20,456 units and the Tata Punch at 20,333 units, while also giving Maruti six models in the month’s top 10.

The Baleno’s number is especially striking because it was 93 percent higher than September 2025, when dispatches stood at 13,173 units. It also came in the first full month of the facelifted model, which went on sale in early September with prices ranging from Rs 5.99 lakh to Rs 9.99 lakh.

The update brought a new 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, revised styling and additional equipment including Level 2 ADAS on the top version. Petrol, CNG, manual and AMT choices continue to give the Baleno a wide spread of variants.

Tata occupied the next two places, although the two models moved in opposite directions year on year. The Nexon finished second at 20,456 units, down 9 percent from 22,573 units in September 2025. The Punch was almost level with it at 20,333 units, up 28 percent from 15,891 units a year earlier.

That left just 123 units between Tata’s two highest-volume models. Both also benefit from unusually broad powertrain line-ups. The Nexon is sold with petrol, diesel, CNG and electric options, while the Punch range includes petrol, CNG and electric versions.

Maruti’s Fronx followed in fourth place with 19,282 units, a 40 percent year-on-year increase. The Wagon R was fifth at 18,835 units, up 22 percent.

The Dzire finished sixth with 17,754 units despite an 11 percent decline from the same month last year. Hyundai’s Creta was seventh at 17,657 units, down 6 percent.

The Swift took eighth place with 17,399 units, up 12 percent, while the combined Mahindra Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic tally of 17,313 units put the Scorpio family ninth. That was also 6 percent lower year on year.

The Ertiga completed the top 10 with 16,911 units, a 40 percent jump from 12,115 units in September 2025.

In other words, Maruti had the Baleno, Fronx, Wagon R, Dzire, Swift and Ertiga in the top 10. Tata had two models, while Hyundai and Mahindra had one each.

The list is also more mixed by body style than the SUV-heavy market narrative might suggest. Five of the top 10 are SUVs or SUV-style models, but three are hatchbacks, one is a compact sedan and one is an MPV.

new baleno 25000 sales milestone

These are wholesale dispatches, not registrations to end customers. A launch month can produce a sharp factory-to-dealer spike because the company is filling the retail network with fresh stock.

That matters with the Baleno because the facelift reached showrooms only weeks before these September numbers were recorded. The 25,392-unit figure therefore shows very strong pipeline movement, but it should not automatically be read as 25,392 retail deliveries to buyers.

Even with that caveat, the result is significant. The Baleno did not merely return to the top 10 after its update. It led the entire chart by nearly 5,000 units over the Nexon.

The next few months will show whether September was mainly a launch-stock surge or the start of a sustained recovery for the premium hatchback. For now, the Baleno has done something that looked unlikely in an SUV-dominated market: put a hatchback back at number one.
