Matrimonial Fraud: Maharashtra man poses as hotelier, rapes, dupes her of Rs 41 Lakh
Mumbai: A 38-year-old man from Maharashtra’s Nandurbar district has been booked for allegedly posing as a millionaire on a matrimonial website, sexually assaulting a woman on the pretext of marriage and cheating her of more than Rs 41 lakh, police said.
The accused allegedly created a fake profile portraying himself as a wealthy hotelier and civil engineer to lure women.
Fake Identity to Gain Trust
According to police, the accused befriended a 36-year-old divorcee from Kalyan East through a matrimonial platform. Claiming he was financially well-off, he allegedly promised to marry her and accept her child, gradually earning her trust.
Investigators said the woman believed his claims and entered into a relationship with him.
Alleged Sexual Assault and Financial Fraud
Police alleged that the accused repeatedly raped the woman at hotels in Panvel and at her residence in Kalyan on the false promise of marriage.
During the relationship, he allegedly cheated her of Rs 41.25 lakh. Investigators said he also forged documents to sell one of her cars without her consent and unlawfully took possession of another vehicle.
Police Suspect More Victims
A case has been registered against the accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rape, cheating, forgery and other offences.
Police suspect the accused may have targeted multiple women using the same modus operandi through matrimonial websites. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest him.
Officials have urged people using online matrimonial platforms to verify the identity and background of prospective matches and remain cautious before sharing money or personal information.
