Wankhede Stadium, which was the historical witness of the 2011 ODI World Cup victory and is called the heartbeat of Mumbai cricket, is today struggling to maintain its existence and identity. Recently, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has expressed a serious concern about this to BCCI. This ground, which is called the Mecca of Indian cricket, is being continuously ignored in hosting international matches for the last few years. Even in the upcoming home season (2026-27), Wankhede has got only one international match (the third ODI against Zimbabwe in January), after which the MCA has requested BCCI for more matches for future tours.
Mumbai's historic Wankhede Stadium, which has been witness to the most memorable moments of Indian cricket history, is yearning for international matches these days. For this reason, Mumbai Cricket Association has put forward a big demand in the 95th annual meeting of BCCI. MCA has clearly told the board that more international matches should be given to Wankhede Stadium in the coming time.
Only 2 tests at Wankhede Stadium in 8 years
Wankhede Stadium is one of the few grounds in India which has been given 'permanent test center' and VIP status by BCCI. That means regular test matches should be held here, but the reality is exactly the opposite. Statistics are testifying that in the last 8 years, only 2 Test matches have been played on this historic ground of Mumbai, which is sheer injustice to the fans.
The move away of cricket's most traditional and prestigious format, Test match, from a big city like Mumbai is disappointing both the fans and the local cricket association. Wankhede ground has been witness to big records of greats and historic victories of Team India. Despite this, for the last few years this historic stadium has been kept yearning for Test cricket.

Got only 1 match this season, fans were disappointed
When BCCI released the list of venues for the home season of 2026-27, the cricket fans of Mumbai got a big shock. Apart from the third ODI match to be held against Zimbabwe in the coming month of January, Wankhede Stadium has not got any other international match. Wankhede was completely wiped out from any high-profile home series against Australia or other big teams. Frustrated with this neglect, MCA had to raise this issue with BCCI.
