McTominay talks Napoli contract and heart procedure
McTominay is among the star attendees at the Gran Gala Del Calcio being held on September 2. The Gran Gala Del Calcio is an annual awards ceremony organised by the AIC, the Italian Players’ association, equivalent to the PFA awards in England.
The Scotland international is in contention to be included in the Men’s Serie A XI of the year and is also up for the overall player of the year award. The former Manchester United midfielder was included in the best Serie A XI and was named the division’s overall player of the year at the same awards ceremony in 2025.
McTominay has started in both of Napoli’s first two matches of the 2026-27 Serie A season, but as was confirmed on Tuesday, he is now set for a spell on the sidelines as he will undergo a minor procedure on his heart following the onset of a mild, benign arrhythmia.
“I’m fine, the procedure was something I’d planned to do with the club for quite a while,” McTominay told reporters on the red carpet on Wednesday evening (via TMW). “We’d already talked about it in pre-season, I’ll be out for a few weeks.”
There is a minor concern that McTominay has not signed a new contract extension since joining Napoli from Manchester United two summers ago. He still has two years remaining on his current deal, but admits that there have not yet been any discussions over a new contract.
“There haven’t been any new talks,” McTominay confessed. “The important thing is what happens on the pitch, not the contract extension. I don’t know when it will happen, it’s not the time to be thinking about that.”
