MediaTek has rolled out the Dimensity 9600 Pro. This is a notable shift in how the firm plans its top end phone chips, because it moves to a 2nm build. The gains in raw speed are not huge on paper, but the efficiency pitch is more bold. According to MediaTek, the Dimensity 9600 Pro can deliver up to 17% better single core results and up to 15% better multi core results than the prior model.
The bigger number is power use. MediaTek says multi core power drops by as much as 61%. The company also notes these results came from testing demo units in its own labs. So for most buyers, the key point may not be whether it hits every benchmark, but what that power cut can mean later in real phone use.
DIMENSITY 9600 PRO MOVES MEDIATEK TO 2NM
The standout change is the jump to 2nm. A smaller process can let chip makers pack in more advanced transistor parts without needing more space. In theory, that helps with the usual tradeoff between speed and battery drain. MediaTek says this chip is the first in its lineup that uses the 2nm process. The other three C2-Pro cores can run up to 3.1GHz. MediaTek says the chip has 17% better single-core speed and 15% better multi-core speed than the prior flagship. Still, the 61% drop in multi-core power draw is the part that stands out. When multi-core use stays high for a while, lower power can mean less heat. MediaTek says a second-gen Super Efficient NPU cuts power use for always-on AI by 40%. It also says its NPU 1090 brings 51% more LLM prefill work and 55% more token output per watt. MediaTek also states the platform can handle on-device AI models up to 30 billion parameters.
