New Delhi: The Parliamentary Committee on Communications and Information has asked MetaFair chief Mark Zuckerberg to issue an unconditional apology within three days for removing a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Facebook on July 23. The committee said that if this is not done, MetaFair may consider withdrawing legal protections and exemptions it enjoys in India.
A parliamentary committee on Wednesday demanded an unconditional apology from MetaFair’s chief Mark Zuckerberg. It said that if the apology is not given within three days of receiving the letter, it may consider withdrawing legal protections available under Section 79(3) of the Information Technology Act and bringing him to justice as a publisher.
A two-day meeting between officials from the Ministry of Information and Technology and META began here today. The government has also invited META’s global team to Delhi.
The Parliamentary Committee, in a letter to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, stated that this decision was taken at a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology held on August 3, 2026. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and Snapchat, Google, X, Meta, and YouTube.
The committee took serious note of a video of Prime Minister Modi addressing students and Gen-Gs regarding the government’s action against exam controversies and paper leaks. According to the committee, this video was removed from Facebook for approximately 5–6 hours.
The meeting also expressed concern about social media platforms disseminating child sexual abuse material and derogatory content against women. The committee stated that if any intermediary platform fails to remove such content, action should be taken against it under Section 79(3) of the IT Act.
Additionally, the Hyderabad Cyber Police’s decision to name the head of Google India as a co-accused in an investment fraud case was also discussed. Complainants allege they lost over ₹4.8 million through fraudulent investment apps. The committee expressed its desire for the Indian government to consider similar action against Google India. Meta has been asked to explain its removal of the Prime Minister’s video, and an apology has been demanded from Mark Zuckerberg.
