Michael Olise joins Bayern for Atletico game but Diaz stays on long injury list

Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise has travelled with the squad for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Atletico Madrid, despite concerns over a knock, though Luis Díaz and Jamal Musiala are among several players still sidelined.

The Ballon d’Or nominee asked to come off late in Bayern’s 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. That game also left midfielder Ismael Saibari and forward Serge Gnabry with more serious injuries.

Olise trained on Monday with a bandage on his right knee. Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said there is a chance he could aggravate the problem.

“We’re taking it day by day,” Eberl said of Olise. “It’s good that he’s traveling with us, because he’s an outstanding player who’s always a great asset. However, we’ll avoid the risk of it turning into a long-term injury.”

Olise is on Bayern’s squad list for the match, and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is also making the trip after missing four games with a foot injury.

Diaz and Musiala both trained on their own while recovering from muscle injuries, but neither has been included in the squad. Saibari is out following ankle surgery, and Gnabry is missing with a torn hamstring.

Assistant coach Aaron Danks is still in charge, as head coach Vincent Kompany remains absent. Kompany left hospital last week after being treated for an infection, having collapsed at training.

Bayern have five points from three Champions League games after two straight draws, and are looking for their first win since September.
