Shock to OpenAI? Microsoft changed AI strategy, now increased use of its models in Excel and Outlook
Microsoft MAI Model: Things are definitely changing in the world of Artificial Intelligence, hence Microsoft has now worked on a new strategy. Let us tell you that the company is gradually increasing the use of its own developed MAI (Microsoft AI) models in place of some AI models of OpenAI and Anthropic in its famous workplace apps like Excel and Outlook. Bloomberg reports that Microsoft has started deploying in-house models to process the thousands of AI prompts it receives every week. Although this change is still in its initial stage, it makes the company’s future AI strategy clearly visible.
Strategy is changing with increasing use of Copilot
It is seen that many smart features of Microsoft were based on AI models of OpenAI and Anthropic. But as the use of AI tools like Copilot continues to grow rapidly, the company wants to reduce its reliance on external AI providers. Its objective is not only technical self-reliance but also to control the continuously increasing operating costs. Regarding this, experts believe that if Microsoft is successful in developing its AI models with the same quality, then the company can gain billions of dollars in the future.
Why is running AI so expensive?
For your information, let us tell you that huge computing resources are required to run large AI models. In which companies pay based on AI tokens that decide how much processing an AI model has done. Whereas for a global company like Microsoft, this expenditure is increasing rapidly with time. Although for now the company is definitely getting some cost benefits due to its long partnership with OpenAI, but in the future, relying only on external AI models can be very expensive.

Company wants to reduce expenditure on Anthropic
Microsoft’s AI chief Mustafa Suleiman clearly expressed the company’s thinking, saying, “We pay a lot of money to Anthropic, so our goal is to reduce that expenditure and ultimately eliminate it completely.” Along with this he further said, “A lot of people in our company are spending millions of dollars on AI tokens,” Which shows how expensive it has become to operate AI services on a large scale. In such a situation, this step of Microsoft is being considered important in terms of both competition and self-reliance in the AI industry.
