WG 2026: Mirabai Chanu won gold, broke 3 records; Became champion for the third consecutive time

Mirabai Chanu Gold Medal CWG 2026: India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has created history in the Commonwealth Games 2026. Mirabai performed brilliantly and won the gold medal in the women’s 48 kg weight category in Glasgow on Sunday. During this period, he maintained his dominance by creating Commonwealth Games records in snatch, clean and jerk and total weight. This is his third consecutive gold medal in the Commonwealth Games.

No one could stand in front of Mirabai
In the women’s 48 kg category, Mirabai Chanu was the strongest contender for the gold medal from the beginning. His dominance can be gauged from the fact that he had registered his entry weight as 187 kg.

In the SEC Armadillo competition, Mirabai won the gold medal by lifting a total weight of 190 kg. After her, the total weight of the player who lifted the highest weight was 160 kg. That means there was a big difference of about 30 kg between Mirabai and her nearest rival.

First attempt failed, then made a record by lifting 85kg
The beginning of Snatch was not as expected for Mirabai. She missed lifting 82 kg in her first attempt. However, after this he made a brilliant comeback and kept himself firmly in the competition by making a successful lift in the next attempt.

After this, Mirabai increased the weight to 85 kg and made the Commonwealth Games record in her name with the successful lift. His performance further increased the pressure on the other players in the race for the gold medal.

Shock in clean and jerk, then a great comeback
Even in clean and jerk, Mirabai suffered a setback in the beginning. His first attempt of 105 kg was declared ‘no lift’ by all three judges. Despite this, the Indian star did not let the pressure overwhelm him. She again landed on the platform and in the next attempt successfully lifted 105 kg weight, ensuring India’s gold medal.

Mirabai’s clean and jerk of 105 kg also became a CWG record, while her total lift of 190 kg including snatch and clean and jerk also became a Games record.

Mirabai’s golden hat-trick in CWG
With this victory, Mirabai Chanu completed the hat-trick of gold medals in the Commonwealth Games. Earlier, he had also won the gold medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast and the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham.

By winning gold in three consecutive Commonwealth Games, Mirabai once again proved her special status in Indian weightlifting. This is also his fourth Commonwealth Games medal overall.

Rishikanta Singh gave India its first medal
Earlier, India opened its medal account in the men’s 60 kg weightlifting event. Rishikanta Singh Chanambam performed brilliantly and won the silver medal.

Rishikanta created a Commonwealth Games record by lifting 121 kg in snatch. He left behind the previous record of 120 kg. After this, he lifted 143 kg weight in clean and jerk. In this way his total weight was 264 kg and he was successful in winning the silver medal.

PM Modi congratulated Mirabai Chanu
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Mirabai Chanu on her historic victory. Praising their continued success, PM Modi called it another proud moment for Indian weightlifting.

PM Modi wrote on X, “Another great chapter in Indian weightlifting!” He said that the talented Mirabai Chanu has once again proved her mettle by winning the gold medal in the 48 kg category of the Commonwealth Games.

The Prime Minister congratulated Mirabai for winning gold medals in consecutive Commonwealth Games and winning the fourth CWG medal overall, calling her an inspiration for every Indian and wished her all the best for the future.
