Missile attack on oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, America blames Iran
New Delhi: The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transportation routes, is once again in the headlines. An oil tanker passing near the coast of Oman caught fire after it was attacked by an unidentified missile. This incident has not only increased concerns about security in the Gulf region, but has also signaled a new threat to the global energy supply and oil market. It is a matter of relief that no casualties have been reported in this attack, but in view of the situation, maritime agencies have become alert.
According to Britain’s maritime security agency United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), this oil tanker was moving towards south near Limah area of Oman. Meanwhile, an unknown missile came from the left side of the ship and hit it, causing it to catch fire. Immediately after the incident, the crew present on the ship tried to control the situation. According to initial information, no injury to any person or environmental damage like oil spill in the sea has been confirmed. At present the investigation of the entire matter is going on.
Warning issued for ships
After the incident, British maritime authorities have advised all commercial ships passing through this route to exercise extra caution. The agencies have said that until the investigation is completed, ships should strictly follow safety guidelines. Experts believe that such incidents can have a direct impact on international trade and maritime traffic.
Iran accused of being behind the attack
American officials have held Iran responsible for this attack. According to media reports, on Monday night the Iranian military fired at least two missiles at commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. It is being told that this oil tanker was also included among the ships that were targeted. Another commercial ship was also damaged. However, the crews of both the ships are said to be safe and no casualties have been confirmed.
Tension increased again after the ceasefire
This incident has come to light at a time when the temporary agreement between America and Iran to stop attacks in the Strait of Hormuz has recently ended. Diplomatic efforts are continuing to reduce tension between the two countries, but the latest attack indicates that the situation in the region is still not completely normal. According to reports, America may also consider options for possible retaliatory action after this attack.
No concrete solution emerged from the talks
Recently, indirect talks were held between America and Iran in Doha, the capital of Qatar. In this meeting, the security of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz and the sea routes were discussed, but no major agreement could be reached. Analysts say that due to this there is uncertainty in the sector and shipping companies are constantly facing risks.
Why is the Strait of Hormuz so important?
The Strait of Hormuz is counted among the world’s busiest and strategic sea routes. According to the US Energy Information Administration, about 20 million barrels of crude oil is transported through this route every day, which is a large part of the global oil supply. If there is any kind of obstruction in this waterway, it directly impacts the international oil market, fuel prices and the global economy.
It has become the center of conflict before too
In recent months, the Strait of Hormuz has become a major center of tension between America and Iran. Earlier too, a sharp rise in oil prices was seen due to incidents of attacks on ships and blockage of sea routes. Although an agreement was reached between the two sides last month to restore maritime traffic, Iran had made it clear that ships would have to use only designated security corridors. Now the latest incident has once again raised the question whether permanent peace will be possible in the region.
