As the date of Bihar Legislative Council elections is approaching, the stir within the Rashtriya Janata Dal regarding candidate selection is increasing. Several days have passed since the nomination process started, but till now the party has not approved the name of its candidate. Interestingly, this time the biggest challenge before the RJD is not the opposition or the NDA, but striking a balance between its own political and social priorities.
RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav is in Singapore these days, while Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav is effectively commanding the party in Patna. In such a situation, the responsibility of selecting a candidate for the possible only seat in the Legislative Council has also fallen on his shoulders. This is the reason why Tejashwi Yadav has become the center of every discussion going on within the party.

On the other hand, outgoing MLC Sunil Singh also remains in the list of contenders. It will not be easy to ignore his active role in the organization and long political experience.
Family’s choice vs. organization’s need
The biggest discussion within the RJD is whether the party will put forward a family face on this seat or will repose confidence in the old and dedicated leaders of the organization.

Owaisi’s party also increased pressure
Amidst this whole incident, AIMIM has also posed a new challenge to RJD. The party has claimed that in return for supporting the Grand Alliance in the last Rajya Sabha elections, it had received assurance of political cooperation in the future. Now AIMIM is demanding support for itself on this seat. However, this decision will not be easy for RJD. Giving a seat to an ally amid already limited political prospects may also create discontent within the party.
Why is this decision important?
This seat of the Legislative Council is not only being considered a political post, but also an indication of RJD’s strategy before the upcoming assembly elections. The selection of the candidate will show whether the party gives priority to social equations, wants to honor the loyal leaders of the organization or chooses the path of strengthening coalition politics.

Whether the candidate is Shivchandra Ram, Sunil Singh or any other face, the impact of this decision will not be limited to the Legislative Council elections only.
