Monsoon ‘disappeared’! Drought in large parts of the country, will there be severe heat again? Know the whole truth about ‘Monsoon Break’

On one hand, many states of India are struggling with heavy rains and floods, while on the other hand, clouds have suddenly disappeared from large parts of the country. The Meteorological Department and experts have warned that there will be negligible rainfall in many areas of North-West, Central and South India for the next few days. This sudden ‘break’ in the weather has increased the worries of not only the common people but also the farmers. After all, what is this sudden ‘break’ in the monsoon season and why is it considered so dangerous? Let us understand in detail.

‘April’ like conditions in July!

Navdeep Dahiya, founder of ‘Live Weather of India’ has made a shocking revelation on social media quoting satellite images. According to him, the pictures of the second week of July are very scary. There are no rain clouds visible anywhere from the Western Ghats to the interior parts of the country. The situation has become such that looking at the weather of July 12, it seems as if the month of April is still going on, because there is a severe lack of moisture and clouds in both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Experts believe that there is little hope of re-activation of monsoon before July 18-20.

What is ‘monsoon break’?

According to meteorologist and former IMD chief Mahesh Pahlawat, monsoon break is a process in which monsoon rain-bearing winds change their path. This usually happens a couple of times in July and August, but this year the occurrence is unusual. During this period, the weather in North-West and Central India becomes completely dry, the sky becomes clear and there is a huge reduction in humidity. Due to this break, the temperature in many cities of North India including Delhi-NCR may again go up to 37-38 degrees Celsius.

Crisis looms over farming and farmers

The month of July is most important for Kharif crops and most of the farming in the country depends on monsoon rains. This break of monsoon is not only causing heat for the common people, but has also brought a big crisis for the farmers. When monsoon breaks, the center of rain shifts towards the foothills of the mountains, deepening the water crisis in the plains.

However, experts have expressed hope that the monsoon trough line may shift back towards the south around July 19-20, due to which rain activities are likely to start once again in these dry areas. Till then the Meteorological Department has advised people to be alert about the changing temperature and humidity.
