Most expensive trophy: FIFA World Cup trophy valued at ₹6.73 crore; value doubled in four years.

The World Cup trophy is made of 18 karat gold and weighs 6.175 kg.

New Delhi. The impact of the sharp increase in gold prices globally is also visible on the most prestigious trophy of the sports world, where the value of gold present in the FIFA World Cup trophy has increased to approximately 7.13 lakh dollars (approximately Rs 6.73 crore).

This figure is more than double what it was at the time of the 2022 World Cup, according to financial market data provider LSEG. The World Cup trophy is made of 18 karat gold and has a total weight of 6.175 kg which includes approximately 4.93 kg of pure gold. The rise in gold prices amid geopolitical tensions, global trade uncertainty and slow economic growth has also taken the value of the trophy to new heights.

Debajit Saha, senior metals analyst at LSEG Metals Research, said gold prices have softened some from recent highs, but the long-term trend still remains very noteworthy. The importance of the World Cup trophy to players is priceless, he said, but the value of the gold it contains offers an interesting statistic of how rapidly the price of the precious metal has increased over the years.

When Argentina won the World Cup held in Qatar in 2022, the value of the gold on the trophy was estimated at around $2.77 lakh. At the time of the introduction of the current design before the 1974 World Cup, its price was around $25,000.

The FIFA World Cup trophy is the only trophy among the world’s major sports trophies which is made of gold. In comparison, the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League trophies are made of sterling silver, with estimated metal-based prices of $16,950 and $22,600, respectively.

The Borg-Warner Trophy, awarded to the winner of the Indianapolis 500 (motor racing competition) in the United States, is one of the most valuable and heaviest trophies. This 1.62 meter high trophy contains approximately 69 kilograms of sterling silver, whose estimated metal value is $1.56 lakh. The FIFA 2026 World Cup started in America on June 11. The final of this tournament of 48 teams will be played on July 19.
