The Central Government has approved the increase in Minimum Support Price (MSP) of six crops including wheat for Rabi Hungama (MSP For Rabi) 2027-28. According to the government, the aim is to ensure that farmers get better and fair prices for their crops. These six crops include wheat, barley, gram, lentil, mustard-rye and sorghum.
The government has raised the highest safflower MSP. Its MSP has been increased by Rs 675 per quintal. Subsequently, the MSP of mustard and rye has increased by Rs 413 per quintal.
Such increase in MSP of other crops
Lentils: Rs 390 per quintal
Barley: Rs 136 per quintal
Gram: Rs 83 per quintal
Wheat: Rs 25 per quintal
Hence the decision to increase MSP
The government said the hike in MSP is in line with the norms set in the Union Budget 2018-19. Under these rules, farmers were targeted to pay MSP at least 1.5 times the average cost of their crops.
According to the government's estimates, farmers can get up to 106 per cent profit in wheat, 96 per cent in mustard and rye, 92 per cent in lentils, 59 per cent in gram, 58 per cent in barley and 50 per cent in sorghum.

Promotion of cultivation of pulses and oilseeds
For the past few years, the government has been encouraging farmers to cultivate crops like pulses and oilseeds instead of relying on only wheat and rice. Hence the MSP of their crops is kept comparatively high. The government believes that this may attract farmers to cultivate other crops.
Increase in government procurement of wheat
According to government figures, the government had procured nearly 3,715 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat during the period 2014-15 to 2025-26. Earlier government procurement of wheat during the 10-year period from 2004-05 to 2013-14 was around 2,254 LMT. This means that there has been a huge increase in wheat procurement by the government compared to the previous few years.
Also Khareji was around 2,302 LMT between 2004-05 and 2013-14 considering 6 major rabi crops along with wheat. Also, during the period 2014-15 to 2025-26, it increased to about 3,921 LMT.
During 2004-05 to 2013-14, a total of about Rs 2.65 lakh crore was paid to farmers of six major rabi crops under MSP. From 2014-15 to 2025-26, this amount increased to Rs 8.36 lakh crore.
Overall, the increase in MSP will help farmers get better prices for their crops and encourage cultivation of crops like pulses and oilseeds, the government said.
