Tragic rail accident in Murshidabad: School van hit by local train, 5 including 3 innocent killed

Murshidabad: A tragic train accident took away the happiness of many families on Friday in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. A school van was hit by a train at Gobindpur railway crossing. Five people, including three school children, died in the accident, while many others were seriously injured. The collision was so severe that the van was completely damaged.

Gate opened after one train passed, another train hit it

According to preliminary investigation, Nabadwip Dham Express had earlier passed through the railway crossing. After this the gate was opened, while Nimtiya-Katwa local train was also going to arrive from the same track within some time. Seeing the gate open, the school van driver tried to take the vehicle across the railway track. Meanwhile, a cyclist was also crossing the tracks. Just then a high speed local train reached there and hit the school van hard. The collision was so severe that the van was blown apart and the children traveling in it got trapped inside.

Treatment of the injured continues in the hospital

Three students and the van driver who were seriously injured in the accident were immediately rushed to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. According to hospital sources, the condition of some of the injured still remains critical and their treatment is ongoing.

Railways announced compensation

Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Eastern Railway spokesperson Shibram Manjhi said that the gateman on duty has been arrested in the matter. An investigation into the incident has been initiated and a 10-member team of senior officials has been sent to the spot. Railways has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident. Besides, it has been said that the entire cost of treatment of the injured will be borne by the Railways.

Local people raised questions on railway system

After the accident, a large number of local people gathered at the spot. People allege that the railway gate was opened ahead of time, when another train was about to arrive. Eyewitnesses say that after seeing the gate open, the van driver thought that the route was safe, but after a few moments a high-speed train arrived. Local people raised questions on the functioning and signaling system of the railway and said that if the gate had remained closed or was operated properly, perhaps this tragic accident could have been avoided. At present, Railways and Police are investigating the entire matter so that the real cause of the accident can be revealed and action can be taken against those responsible.
