Myanmar Assures India Its Territory Will Not Be Used Against New Delhi’s Security Interests

Myanmar has assured India that its territory will not be allowed to be used for activities detrimental to New Delhi’s security interests, with both countries agreeing to deepen intelligence sharing and strengthen operational coordination to address common security challenges, according to an official government statement issued on Wednesday.

The assurance was given during the 23rd National Level Bilateral Meeting, a two-day high-level dialogue that concluded on Wednesday. The Indian delegation was led by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, while senior officials from Myanmar represented their government during the discussions.

According to the statement, the two sides reviewed the overall security situation along the India-Myanmar border and reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation against cross-border threats, including insurgency, organised crime, arms trafficking, narcotics smuggling and other transnational security challenges.

Officials agreed to further strengthen intelligence sharing and improve operational coordination between the security agencies of both countries. The objective is to facilitate timely exchange of information and coordinated action against groups and networks operating along the shared border.

Myanmar also reiterated its commitment to ensuring that its territory is not used by insurgent groups or other elements engaged in activities that could threaten India’s security. The assurance comes amid India’s continued focus on strengthening border security and preventing cross-border movement of militants and illegal networks in the northeastern region.

The meeting also reviewed existing mechanisms for border management and discussed measures to improve cooperation between law enforcement agencies. Both sides emphasised the importance of sustained engagement to maintain peace, stability and security along the nearly 1,643-kilometre India-Myanmar border.

India and Myanmar share close strategic and security ties, particularly in combating insurgency and transnational crime. Cooperation between the two countries has gained added significance in recent years due to evolving security dynamics in Myanmar and their impact on India’s northeastern states.

The dialogue reflects the continued commitment of both governments to strengthening bilateral security cooperation while addressing shared regional challenges through coordinated action and institutional engagement.
