Northeast extremism will be curbed! Myanmar’s new President is coming to India, not China; what is its importance
Min Aung Hlaing India Visit: Myanmar’s new President Min Aung Hlaing is coming to India on his first foreign visit after assuming office. His visit to New Delhi is being considered special because the Myanmar government is generally considered close to China and Russia. In such a situation, giving first priority to India is being considered an important sign in the changing strategic politics of South Asia and Indo-Pacific region. This visit is being considered very important for India-Myanmar relations as well as for the security of North-East India and anti-insurgency operations.
Priority to India instead of China
Min Aung Hlaing took over as the President of Myanmar on 10 April 2026. Kirti Vardhan Singh attended his coronation ceremony from India’s side. During this time, he was invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit India.
According to reports, the President of Myanmar wants to discuss many important issues like economy, development, security and border management with New Delhi. Before this, he had also met PM Modi separately during the BIMSTEC conference. Giving priority to India despite close relations with China is being considered a big message in terms of regional strategy.
1600 kilometer long border becomes a challenge
There is an approximately 1,600 km long border between India and Myanmar, which has long been a challenge to the security of the northeastern states. This border is inaccessible and sensitive at many places, which extremist organizations have been taking advantage of. Recently, the then Indian Navy Chief Dinesh Kumar Tripathi also visited Myanmar. The purpose of his visit was to strengthen maritime and security cooperation between the two countries. Continuous talks are going on between the two countries on border security and anti-terrorism strategy.
Myanmar plays an important role in ‘Mission 2029’
The Central Government is working on “Mission 2029” to completely eliminate extremism in the North-Eastern states. According to reports, the government has set 2029 as the deadline to dismantle the militant networks operating in the North-East.
However, the situation in Manipur still remains the biggest challenge. Ethnic violence and extremist activities have not been completely controlled there. Security agencies believe that many militant organizations use the Myanmar border for safe haven and supply of weapons. Because of this, Myanmar’s cooperation has become very important for India.
safe haven for terrorists
Many militant organizations of Northeast India like NSCN, ULFA and some Manipuri groups have been hiding and running training camps in Myanmar for a long time. When Indian security forces intensify action, these organizations cross the border and take shelter in Myanmar.
India has already conducted surgical strikes against militant hideouts on Myanmar soil. Experts believe that if both the countries create better coordination on border security, then effective control of extremism can be possible.
Narco-terrorism is also a big concern
India-Myanmar border is considered a big challenge not only for extremism but also for narco-terrorism. There have been allegations for a long time that drug, arms and illegal smuggling networks are operating from this border. According to experts, networks linked to China, Pakistan and in recent years Bangladesh have also been active in this region. In such a situation, Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to India is not only a diplomatic meeting but is also considered very important for the security and regional stability of the North-East.
