Nagpur Gas Leak: A very scary incident has come to light from Nagpur district of Maharashtra at midnight. Chlorine gas suddenly started leaking in a water purification plant built in Godhani area. Within no time this poisonous gas spread to the surrounding settlements and people started suffocating. At that time most of the people were sleeping deeply in their homes. Due to the strong smell of gas in the air and severe burning sensation in the throat, an atmosphere of chaos was created in the entire area. People started running out of their homes to save their lives. Due to this accident, the health of about 40 people deteriorated and they were immediately admitted to different hospitals.
The accident happened at midnight and spread panic
This entire incident is being said to have happened late in the night between 12.15 to 1 am. Work was going on as usual in the water treatment plant under Godhani Nagar Panchayat. Then suddenly a strong flow of chlorine gas started from a big gas cylinder or storage installed there. Chlorine is heavier than air and spreads very quickly in low-lying areas. By the time the employees on duty at the plant could understand anything, the gas had engulfed the entire complex. Eight to ten employees working there started becoming unconscious on the spot and started coughing badly. After this, with the direction of the wind, the gas reached the residential areas near the plant.

Health of local citizens worsened and there was shouting
The impact of gas was most visible in residential areas like Nagmandir Tekri and Phago Patil Layout, located right near the plant. About twenty to twenty-five local citizens came under its direct influence. People suddenly started feeling heaviness in the chest, severe burning sensation in the eyes, vomiting and severe difficulty in breathing. Many small children and elderly people started becoming unconscious due to this poison spread in the air. There was screams all around and people ran towards safe places with their families. This matter was immediately informed to the local police and fire department control room.
Action of rescue team and taking patients to hospital
As soon as the information was received, the Manakpur police station team and fire brigade vehicles reached the spot without any delay. The rescue team, wearing special protective equipment, first cordoned off the leak site. After great effort, the fire brigade personnel controlled the leakage by closing the main gas valve. Also, police personnel started taking sick people to the nearest hospitals of the city with the help of ambulances and private vehicles. As soon as the team of doctors reached the hospital, they immediately took the patients on oxygen support. Out of the forty affected people, the condition of four to five people is said to be very serious, who have been immediately shifted to ICU. The remaining people are being treated in the general ward.
Administration's restrictions and police's appeal
After the incident, the local administration and police have taken strict security measures. Officials of Manakpur Police Station said that the situation has been completely brought under control, but for security reasons, a radius of two hundred meters around the plant has been completely sealed. People have been advised to avoid going to this restricted area till 11 am. The police have also appealed to the citizens not to pay attention to any kind of rumors and remain calm. The team of environment and safety experts is now closely investigating whether this leakage of chlorine in such a big plant was due to some technical fault or human negligence.
