India opened their five-match series in scintillating fashion, pulling off an eight-wicket victory against the West Indies at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. On an evening shaped by sharp spin, contentious umpiring calls, and blistering strokeplay, India chased down a target of 172 inside 15 overs to leave the visitors stunned.
Umpiring Drama Sparks Controversy in IND vs WI 1st T20I
The tone of the contest was set during a volatile first innings where West Indies found themselves on the wrong side of crucial decisions. Sent into bat, the visitors started briskly before losing early wickets in the powerplay. The first major flashpoint arrived with the run-out of Shimron Hetmyer. The left-hander believed he had grounded the toe of his bat inside the popping crease, but television replays revealed that while the blade had crossed the line, it remained suspended in the air. The dismissal left the West Indies camp visibly frustrated as Hetmyer was forced to walk back for five.
Later in the Indian chase, another umpiring call raised eyebrows. A diving effort by Matthew Forde to catch Ishan Kishan was referred upstairs. Multiple slow-motion angles suggested the ball may have brushed the turf as Forde slid across the ground, leading the TV umpire to give the benefit of the doubt to the batter. While decisions on flat two-dimensional screens can often be contentious, the ruling extinguished any slim hope the West Indies had of staging a fightback.

Naman Dhir Spins a Web on Dream Debut
Before the Indian fireworks began with the bat, all-rounder Naman Dhir delivered a bowling performance that caught everyone off guard. Entering the side ahead of seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, questions were raised about whether Dhir’s part-time off-spin could make a meaningful impact on an international stage. Dhir answered those doubts emphatically.
Exploiting a Lucknow pitch that offered substantial grip and turn, Dhir extracted up to 3.4 degrees of deviation off the surface, out-turning established spinners in the contest. He broke a dangerous 70-run stand between Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford by removing Hope for 52. Dhir tore through the middle order to finish with outstanding figures of 3 for 31, registering one of the finest bowling displays by an Indian on T20I debut as the West Indies were bundled out for 171 in 19.1 overs.

Captain Shreyas Iyer Lights Up Ekana with Record 42-Ball Century
Known for his strong technique against spin bowling, Iyer paced his innings with great tactical awareness. India faced early pressure in the chase after losing both openers, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, inside the powerplay. Iyer walked in and immediately calmed the nerves, reading the conditions and playing cautiously through the initial phase.
He initially relied on sharp running between the wickets, crisp placements, and conventional boundaries to rotate the strike. Iyer reached his half-century in 28 balls, laying a stable platform for the team. Once he found his rhythm, he completely changed gears.
After crossing fifty, the Indian captain completely changed gears and launched a brutal attack on the West Indies bowlers. He smashed 10 fours and 6 sixes, turning the run chase into a one-sided affair. After reaching his fifty, he needed just 14 more balls to score his next 50 runscompleting his maiden T20I century in only 42 balls. The Caribbean bowling attack had no answers as boundaries continued to flow from his bat.
