Naveen Patnaik Accuses BJP Government of Misusing Power in Tikhiri Sarpanch Case
The arrest of Tikhiri Panchayat Sarpanch Chameli Ojha has triggered a major political controversy in Odisha, with Leader of the Opposition Naveen Patnaik launching a sharp attack on the BJP-led state government. The issue has sparked a wider debate over democratic rights, governance and the treatment of elected representatives in the state.
Chameli Ojha, the elected sarpanch of Tikhiri Panchayat in Kendrapara district, was arrested following an incident at the Mahakalapada Block office. According to police, a case was registered against her and her brother based on allegations that they abused a Block Development Officer and assaulted government personnel during a dispute at the office.
However, the arrest has drawn strong reactions from opposition parties and civil society groups. Supporters of Ojha claim that she had been raising issues related to local governance and alleged irregularities in her panchayat, and that the action against her raises serious questions about the treatment of elected grassroots representatives.
Naveen Patnaik, who has recently intensified his criticism of the BJP government over law-and-order and governance issues, used the Chameli Ojha episode to question the state’s handling of democratic institutions and public representatives. The former Chief Minister has repeatedly accused the BJP government of allowing democratic values and public safety to deteriorate since taking office.
The controversy widened further after Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee chief Bhakta Charan Das met Chameli Ojha and extended support to her. Congress leaders have demanded a fair and impartial investigation, arguing that the matter should be handled transparently and without political influence.
Meanwhile, the BJP government and police authorities have defended their actions, maintaining that the arrest was carried out according to law following complaints and evidence gathered during the investigation. Officials have stated that legal proceedings will continue through the courts.
With opposition parties rallying behind Chameli Ojha and the BJP standing by the police action, the case has evolved from a local administrative dispute into a significant political issue in Odisha, highlighting growing tensions between the ruling government and opposition forces in the state.
