sama rice porridge
A good alternative to Sabudana Khichdi is Sama Rice Khichdi. It can be prepared with potatoes, peanuts and mild spices. Sama rice cooks quickly and can be made mild or spicy as per your preference. To make it, you will need half a cup of sama rice, one boiled potato, two tablespoons of roasted peanuts, one spoon of ghee or peanut oil, cumin, green chilli, rock salt, green coriander and lemon.
First of all, wash the Sama rice two to three times and soak it for 15 minutes. Now heat ghee in a pan and add cumin and green chillies in it. After this, fry the chopped boiled potatoes lightly. Mix rice and rock salt in it and add one and a half cup of water. Cover the pan and cook for about 10 to 12 minutes. When the rice becomes soft, add roasted peanuts, green coriander and lemon juice and serve. Keep in mind that do not add more water than required, otherwise the Khichdi may become sticky.
buckwheat flour cheela
If you feel like eating something crisp and tasty during the fast, then buckwheat flour cheela can be a good option. Adding bottle gourd to it can improve its taste and texture. It can be served with curd or chutney to be eaten during fasting. For this, half a cup of buckwheat flour, three to four spoons of grated bottle gourd, two spoons of curd, rock salt, green chilli and some ghee are required.
First of all, mix buckwheat flour, grated gourd, curd, rock salt and finely chopped green chillies in a vessel. Prepare the solution by adding water as per requirement. Now apply some ghee on the hot pan and spread the batter and give it the shape of cheela. Cook it on low to medium flame until it turns golden on both sides. Eat prepared cheela with curd or vrat chutney. While buying flour, keep in mind its quality and freshness.
Makhana Kheer
If you feel like eating sweets during the fast and want to try something different from Sabudana Kheer, then you can make Makhana Kheer. This dish prepared with milk, makhana and cardamom is delicious and can be eaten both hot or cold. To make Makhana Kheer, take one cup of Makhana, two cups of milk, one to two spoons of ghee, cardamom, chopped almonds and sugar or sugar as per taste.
First of all, heat ghee in a pan and fry the makhanas lightly. When they cool down, grind them coarsely. Now boil milk in a vessel and add crushed makhana in it. Cook it on low flame for 10 to 12 minutes. When the makhana becomes soft, add sugar or sugar candy and cardamom as per taste. After this, cook for five to ten more minutes. Serve kheer by adding chopped almonds on top. If the kheer becomes too thick, some milk can be added as per requirement.
Sweet Potato Chaat
If you feel like eating salty and spicy food during the fast, then sweet potato chaat is an easy option. It does not take much time to make it and it does not require much material. Delicious chaat can be prepared by mixing boiled sweet potatoes with a few simple ingredients. For this, take two boiled sweet potatoes, rock salt, black pepper, lemon juice, green coriander and roasted peanuts.
First of all, cut the boiled sweet potatoes into small pieces. Now add rock salt, black pepper, lemon juice and roasted peanuts to it. Add finely chopped coriander on top and mix well. Your spicy sweet potato chaat is ready. It is better to eat it fresh.
By including these four recipes in Navratri fast, you can bring taste and variety in your daily food. However, choose the ingredients used in the fast and the options like rock salt as per your family tradition. If you fast the whole day, then take care to drink enough water and eat a balanced amount of food as per your health and needs.
