NCPI was formed in January 2023. It was registered with the Election Commission as a registered but unrecognized political party. Despite being registered in West Bengal, the party made its first electoral bid in the Tripura Assembly elections.

Magic did not work in Tripura elections

However, the party’s performance in the electoral arena was very weak. An attempt was made to field candidates on seven seats, but many nominations were rejected. Ultimately the party’s candidates could contest only two seats and in total they received 822 votes. Even if one supported independent candidate is added, the party’s total vote figure remained around 1,200. No candidate appeared in the contest.

Who is running the party?

The party’s president is Uttiya Kundu, while his wife Shewali Kundu is the treasurer. Both their names are related to Howrah district of West Bengal. During the elections, the party had tried to portray itself as the voice of the tribal and deprived communities, but as soon as the elections were over, its organization became almost inactive.

The organization cooled down after the elections

Some leaders and candidates associated with the party in Tripura claim that after the elections they lost touch with the leadership and the organization gradually came to a standstill. The party could not move forward due to lack of resources and internal differences.

Now the discussion has reached Parliament

Now the situation has completely changed. The small party has suddenly become important in national politics after 20 rebel Trinamool Congress MPs joined NCPI. The rebel MPs have also demanded recognition as a separate parliamentary group in the Lok Sabha. With this, NCPI, which was once limited to a few hundred votes, has now become a new topic of discussion in parliamentary politics.
