Neeraj Chopra’s entry in Diamond League, ‘Golden Boy’ will play the first match in Doha meet
doha India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will begin his athletics season at the Doha Diamond League 2026 on Friday. The organizers confirmed his participation in the competition in the entry list of the competition released on Monday. This will be Neeraj Chopra’s fourth consecutive appearance in the Doha leg of the Diamond League.
The two-time Olympic medalist had won the 2023 edition of the Doha Diamond League with a throw of 88.67m, finished second in 2024 with 88.36m and set a national record of 90.23m last year but finished second behind Germany’s Julian Weber.
This will be the first competition of the 2026 athletics season for Neeraj Chopra, who was recovering from a back injury suffered during an off-season training camp in Switzerland. The Indian javelin throw star was last seen in action at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo in September. Neeraj Chopra’s participation in the Diamond League has been confirmed as he has been provisionally included in India’s 32-member athletics squad for the Commonwealth Games 2026.
The inclusion of an Indian athlete in the men’s javelin throw event in Doha adds more quality to an already strong field. While Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem has been dropped from the entry list after being initially named in the field, Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathiraj, the reigning world champion, is set to compete in Doha.
Rumesh Pathiraj is coming to Doha after a spectacular throw of 92.62m in the Rome Diamond League earlier this month. The Doha meet is the seventh leg of the 2026 Diamond League season, which will conclude with the series finals in Brussels on September 4 and 5.
