Decision withdrawn due to huge public outcry and environmental concerns

Let us tell you that this project, to be built at a cost of about Rs 27,000 crore, was surrounded by controversies from the very beginning. The main reason behind this decision is the farmers' movement. In which farmers of Parandur and surrounding 12 villages of Kanchipuram district were continuously protesting against the acquisition of fertile agricultural land for a long time. The second reason for this is huge damage to the environment. Reports by the Aviation Authority of India (AAI) and environmental experts had revealed that large-scale wetlands and water bodies were present on the proposed site, which was in danger of disturbing the environmental balance. Apart from this, before the elections, Chief Minister Vijay had visited the affected Eganapuram and other villages and assured the public that there will be no problem in their livelihood.

New options and expansion of existing airports

The Chief Minister has announced a two-pronged strategy to meet the needs of Chennai's aviation sector and cargo traffic. The government will build an international airport at a new location near Chennai. For this, instructions have been given to start a technical feasibility study, so that such a place can be chosen where there can be minimal damage to the population and agriculture. Also, until the new greenfield airport is built, the capacity of the existing Chennai International Airport will be further increased. Under this, a state-of-the-art Terminal 5 (T5) and a new approach road will also be constructed in the north-west part of the airport. This expansion will directly increase the airport's annual passenger capacity from 35 million to 55 million.
